Dwyer V8-WP Weatherproof Vane Flow Switch
Posted on: 03/06/2026
During the operation of a water-cooled Chiller system, the worst-case scenario occurs when the cooling water pump or primary chilled water pump suddenly stops, but the compressor assembly continues to run. When this happens, the evaporating refrigerant quickly depletes the thermal energy of the stagnant water in the evaporator barrel, causing localized freezing. The volumetric expansion of ice will completely rupture the internal copper tubes, causing catastrophic damage. The V8-WP flow switch by Dwyer serves as a critical safety "gatekeeper," providing an interlock to instantly prevent this disaster.
What is the Dwyer V8-WP Outdoor Flow Switch?
The V8-WP model is a mechanical Vane-operated flow switch. The "WP" in the product code stands for "Weatherproof," indicating that the device possesses a protective casing made of a solid die-cast aluminum alloy meeting the NEMA 4 standard (equivalent to IP65/IP66 protection). This fully watertight design allows the device to operate reliably outdoors in rainstorms without the risk of electrical contacts short-circuiting.
Key Features and Design :
NEMA 4 Enclosure: Prevents the ingress of direct water spray and fog, making it extremely suitable for installation on water supply pipes leading to roof-mounted Cooling Towers.
Versatile Vane: The device comes with a stainless steel vane featuring pre-marked increments. Engineers can easily use pliers to trim the vane to fit any pipe size ranging from 1 inch to 6 inches.
Jam-Proof Structure: The mechanical pivot shaft does not make direct contact with the sediment-carrying water chamber, ensuring the Micro-switch contact always trips decisively.

Hard-Wired Interlock Application :
In Motor Control Center (MCC) wiring diagrams, the signal from the flow switch is rarely used for control via software communication networks; instead, it must be directly connected using hard wires.
Specifically: The Normally Open (NO) contact of the V8-WP is wired in series with the enable signal circuit of the Chiller compressor. When the pump runs and creates sufficient flow, the water pushes the vane, closing the contact and supplying power for the compressor to operate. If the water flow stops due to a jammed valve or broken pump, the pushing force is lost, the spring pulls the vane back, and the contact opens. Immediately, the compressor control circuit is de-energized in a fraction of a millisecond, forcing an emergency stop before temperatures drop to the freezing point.
Technical Installation Notes:
Calculating Vane Length: Do not allow the vane to scrape the bottom of the pipe. It should be cut about 1-2 cm shorter than the inner pipe diameter to prevent bottom sludge from jamming the vane.
Installation Location: Adhere to the rule of 5D straight pipe upstream and 3D straight pipe downstream of the switch to avoid false alarms (contact chattering) caused by turbulent water flow.
