Comprehensive Wiring Guide for the Honeywell MS8109F1210 Damper Actuator

In HVAC, VAV, and building smoke extraction systems, the precise wiring of a damper actuator is a critical factor in ensuring both operational efficiency and safety. The MS8109F1210 model by Honeywell is an advanced actuator featuring an integrated Spring Return mechanism, designed specifically for fail-safe applications in the event of a power outage.

This technical guide has been compiled by the engineering team at DLK – DLK TRADING SERVICE COMPANY LIMITED based on standard datasheets. Our goal is to help engineers and contractors understand the proper wiring procedures to install a genuine Honeywell damper actuator safely and optimally.

1. Technical Overview of the Honeywell MS8109F1210

As part of the highly reliable Honeywell MS4109, MS8109 damper actuators series, the MS8109F1210 version possesses several key specifications that installers must review before proceeding with wiring:

  • Power Supply: 24 VAC (±20%, 50/60 Hz) or 24 VDC.
  • Torque: 80 lb-in (9 Nm) – Sufficient for driving medium-sized damper areas.
  • Control Signal: 2-Position (On/Off control).
  • Fail-Safe Mechanism (Spring Return): The internal spring will automatically return the damper shaft to its normal closed (or open) position when power is lost.
  • Auxiliary Switches: The "1210" suffix indicates that this actuator has two built-in SPDT auxiliary switches to report the damper's status to the BMS/DDC controller.

2. 24V Power Wiring Instructions

The MS8109F1210 operates on simple On/Off control. While the power wiring is straightforward, strict adherence to the guidelines is required to prevent circuit board damage.

Identify the main power cables (typically numbered or color-coded):

  • Wire No. 1 (Black): Connect to the Negative (-) terminal for 24 VDC, or the Common/Neutral line for 24 VAC.
  • Wire No. 2 (Red): Connect to the Positive (+) terminal for 24 VDC, or the Hot/Line line for 24 VAC.

Operating Principle post-wiring:

  • When the DDC relay supplies 24V to wires 1 and 2, the motor winds the spring and drives the damper to the fully open position (usually 90 degrees).
  • Upon power interruption (a power outage or a cut signal from the DDC), the mechanical energy stored in the spring is released instantly. It automatically drives the actuator back to the 0-degree position, closing the damper tight to block airflow or smoke.

3. Auxiliary Switches Wiring (Feedback to BMS)

The built-in auxiliary switches are essential components of the MS8109F1210, allowing the BMS to verify whether the damper has successfully opened or closed. The actuator contains two completely independent SPDT switch assemblies:

Switch 1 Assembly (Narrow Angle) Switch 2 Assembly (Wide Angle)
S1: Common S4: Common
S2: Normally Closed (NC) S5: Normally Closed (NC)
S3: Normally Open (NO) S6: Normally Open (NO)

How to wire to the PLC/DDC panel:

  • To report a "Fully Closed" status: Use Switch 1 (typically triggers at 7°). Connect S1 to the 24V signal source (or DI Common) from the panel, and route S3 (NO) to the Digital Input (DI) of the controller. When the damper closes past 7 degrees, S1 makes contact with S3, sending an ON signal.
  • To report a "Fully Open" status: Use Switch 2 (typically triggers at 85°). Connect S4 to the signal source, and route S6 (NO) to the corresponding DI on the DDC panel.

4. Testing & Commissioning

After the wiring is complete, technicians must perform the following checks before handing over the system:

  1. Voltage Check: Use a multimeter to measure the voltage at the power terminals. Ensure it is strictly within the 24 VAC/VDC range. Applying 220VAC will instantly destroy the actuator.
  2. No-Load Run: Apply 24V power. Observe the actuator shaft; it should rotate smoothly without excessive mechanical grinding noises.
  3. Fail-Safe Spring Test: Abruptly disconnect power from wires 1 and 2. The actuator must automatically spring back to its original closed position (spring return time is typically around 20 seconds).
  4. Feedback Signal Check: Use the multimeter's continuity mode to test the S1-S3 and S4-S6 contacts, verifying they trigger correctly at their designated angles.
